Islanders Run Past Southeastern Louisiana, 74-53

HAMMOND, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team picked up its fourth Southland Conference win of the year as it topped Southeastern Louisiana, 74-53, at University Center Thursday evening.

The Islanders notched three double-doubles in the win with junior Shay Weaver leading the way for the squad, putting in 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while Toledo, Ohio native Olivia Fouty added 18 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year.

Junior Ashanti Plummer put in 11 points and snatched a career-high 12 boards for her first double-double as an Islander.

Southeastern Louisiana got back into the game in the second half with a 14-6 run, cutting the Islanders lead to 13 points. Weaver broke the Lady Lions run with a 3-pointer off a Jennifer Ramirez assist with 13:27 left. From then on, it was all Islanders. AMCC led by as many as 27 points in the second half, allowing each dressed player to enter the game.

A&M-Corpus Christi (8-9, 4-2 SLC) controlled the offensive glass, corralling 18 offensive rebounds on the night, turning the extra chances into 20 points. The Islanders were able to outscore the Lady Lions 38-14 in the paint.

Through the first five minutes of the game, both teams combined to shoot 3-for-17, only putting six points on the scoreboard. After the 15-minute mark things started flowing for the Islanders as the team went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-10 lead over the home Lady Lions. The run was started by a 3-pointer by Fouty, followed by jumpers from Weaver and Plummer. AMCC went into the locker room with a 41-23 lead.

The Islanders shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74) from the field while holding SELA to 29.7 percent (19-of-64).

Sophomore Camesha Davis scored eight points in 22 minutes of play while Kassie Jones added five.

Erica Hernandez led the Lady Lions (6-11, 2-4 SLC) with 12 points on the night. Nanna Pool added 8 points and 11 rebounds.

The Islanders will continue their road trip as they head to New Orleans to face the Lady Privateers Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the Islander men's basketball team and will also serve as UNO's homecoming.
