42 Islanders Named to Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Department of Athletics placed 42 student-athletes on the 2014 Southland Conference Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll. A student-athlete must earn at least a 3.0 GPA during the preceding fall semester to qualify for the honor. The Fall Honor Roll includes Islanders who took part in men's and women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball.

Leading the way for the Islanders are 11 athletes with a 4.0 GPA, including four members of the women's cross country team. Brandie Garcia, Melissa Martinez, Liz Romo and Alexandria Rossi all posted perfect GPAs, as did three of their counterparts for the men's team – Justin Adame, Philipp Baar and Valentinas Rudys. Soccer (Emma Biba and Nanna Poulsen) and volleyball (Ashley Phelps and Haley Satterwhite) each had two players post a perfect 4.0.

Volleyball had an impressive 11 players earn spots on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. In addition to Phelps and Satterwhite, Kirstee McGarva, Shayla Maldonado, Madeleine Doud, Kristyn Nicholson, Brittany Gilpin, Maddy Wall, Chelby Stanford, Brianna Brink and Hailey King were all recognized for their academics. Phelps and Brink were both named Academic All-Southland last month as well.

The soccer squad saw 13 players recognized academically, with Biba and Poulsen leading the charge. In addition to those two, Jessica Berdan, Amanda Ramirez, Sara Chandlee, Christina Remmes, Chandler Devine, Jacey Love, Brooke Erdmann, Hailey Sutton, Hannah Joseph, Aulona Velaj and Megan Delaney all posted a GPA of 3.0 or better during the fall season. 

The cross country squads both showed well in the classroom, with both the men's and women's squads placing seven players on the list. Along with the women's quartet that earned a 4.0, Carissa Pinon, Regina Salinas, Mairin Cahill, Shelby Polasek and Jasmine McCoy were also honored. For the men, Edgar Martinez, Logan Pittdman, Christoph Hintz, Jordan Wright, Steven Galli and Brandon Lacy all joined Adame, Baar and Rudys on the Honor Roll.

The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
