AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Peter Nagy and sophomore Kevin Bettendroffer highlighted some tough competition today for the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team on the second day of play at the UT Invitational at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
"Kevin played a guy that's been top 30 to a 7-5 third set," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I think he showed what a high-quality player he will be for the Islanders. We competed hard today and tomorrow is another opportunity to max out the things we can control and get a little better.
"Peter, Kevin and Wilks played very high-level matches today. Some guys were not able to play, but they still contributed cheering and encouraging the guys that did, so I'm proud of them for that."
After a heartbreaking three-set thriller on Friday, Nagy came out ready to battle in his second match of the weekend against Alex Sendegeya of Texas Tech. The senior secured the first set, 6-4, before clinching a 7-6 (3) second-set tiebreaker.
Bettendroffer put together another intense match against the Longhorns. The native of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, France topped George Goldhoff 6-3 in the first set before coming up short 7-5 in the second and third sets.
In his second career singles match as an Islander, junior Mitchell Cook fell 6-1, 6-2, to William Jou of Texas. Junior Ricardo Mayagoitia also dropped his singles match with a tight 7-5 first set loss and a 6-0 second-set loss to Nick Naumann of Texas. After picking up a win on Friday, Paul Cook fell 6-3, 6-1, to David Herrerias of Arkansas to wrap play.
The Islanders started the day with three doubles matches. The freshman and junior pair of Wilks Kothmann and Mayagoitia fell 6-2, to William Jou (Texas) and Sendegeya of Texas Tech, while Texas took a pair of doubles matches from the Islanders on the other two courts. John Mee and Naumann defeated P. Cook and M. Cook, 6-2, and the Longhorn's Adrien Berkowicz and Goldhoff sealed a 6-3 win over Nagy and Bettendroffer.
The event is a mock-dual match setup that counts toward individual rankings, instead of team rankings. The format is a round-robin individual competition. The invitational will conclude tomorrow with doubles play set to start at 9:30 a.m. followed by singles.
