TULSA, Okla. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team shot a 638 (320-318) for the first day of action at the ORU Shootout, presented by Bob Hurley Auto, on Monday at Meadowbrook Country Club. Freshman Nagisa Miura (85-72) and sophomore Ana Paredes (76-81) led the way by shooting 157 in the first two rounds.
"I knew that there would be growing pains with such a young team, having four freshmen playing in their first collegiate tournament," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "We did some very good things out there today, and as we build consistency, I think we'll be able to compete within our league. I'm excited to see how we can grow as a team throughout this year, and I think as we gain more and more experience, we have the potential to do something special."
Julia Dereniwsky (78-82) shot a 160 on the opening day, while fellow freshmen Anna Millet-Esteve (81-83—164) and Olivia Lowe (88-84—172) rounded out the scores for the Islanders in the opening two rounds.
Host Oral Roberts holds the team lead with a 579 (292-287), while Sam Houston State sits just two shots back at 581 (293-288). Missouri State (300-294) and Arkansas State (300-294) are tied for third at 594.
ORU's Alejandra Acosta leads the way at 138 (71-67) to sit 4-under par, the only player in the red for the tournament. Eastern Kentucky's Becky Sharpe and Sam Houston State's Paige Nelson are tied for second at 143, while five players delivered a 146 on the opening day in a logjam for fourth.
The final round of the ORU Shootout will tee off at 8:30 on Tuesday morning. Updates will be provided at the conclusion of the round on GoIslanders.com and on social media via Twitter (@IslandersGolf) and Facebook (Islanders Golf).
