Top Performance #2: Men's 4x400 Team Wins Southland Title
It was a tremendous year for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track programs, which took part in its inaugural season in the Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium. The Islanders hosted a pair of track meets at the stadium, and set a number of records throughout the 2014 spring season.
But the Islanders saved their most dramatic performance for the very last, in the final event of the final day of the 2014 Southland Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The 4x400 team of Andres Salazar, David Carrillo, Javier Reyes and Angelo Garland — three freshmen and one junior – came in to the conference meet expected to contend for a title, holding a school record of 3:12.92, the second-best mark in the field, behind host Central Arkansas' 3:09.79.
After the first heat saw Lamar's 3:13.79 leading the way, Salazar lined up and started the historic relay. When Garland crossed the line just 4/10 of a second ahead of Southeastern Louisiana's Brandon Daniels, the foursome had bested its school record by nearly three seconds, posting a time of 3:10.03 to take home the title. On the strength of the relay team's 10 points, the Islanders finished in eighth place, matching the best finish in school history for the men's side.
While the race marked the end of the season for Salazar, Carrillo and Reyes, Garland qualified for the 400-meter dash at the NCAA West Preliminary in Fayetteville, Ark., where the freshman wrapped up his debut campaign by finishing fifth in his heat and 40th overall.
