CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore Dani Tefft was named to the Southland Conference All-Academic Second Team, the league announced today. For Tefft, it marks her first all-academic honor in her career.
"We are very proud of the effort Dani gives us both on the field and in the classroom," head coach Stephanie Hughes said. "She has been a stellar student from day one and this recognition as academic all-conference shows the hard work she puts in daily in the classroom."
The Sugar Land, Texas, native achieved a 3.78 GPA while majoring in English and was a consistent leader in the Islanders' lineup. She finished second on the team with a .297 batting average while posting an Islanders' top 10 season-best of 14 stolen bases. The left-hander started in all 52 of the Islanders' games in left field and was second on the team with 26 runs.
Under Hughes, the Islanders have had three All-Academic honorees, with Tefft joining former Islanders Hannah Schwarz and Greta Cecchetti to the Southland All-Academic teams. Schwarz was named to the first team and Cecchetti to the second team in 2012 during Hughes' first season.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
