Islanders Have Strong Day in Field in Day One of UIW Invitational

FULL RESULTS

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi track and field teams took to the field in a successful day one of action in the UIW Invitational on Friday.

"We are heading in the right direction, as the student-athletes are becoming more consistent every time out," assistant coach Hickel Woolery said. "This is a good sign since the main goal at this point of the season is to continue to improve as we lead up to the Southland Championships."

One Islander had a strong showing in several different field events, as Isabella Baptiste set personal records in the shot put (10.21m, 33' 6"), high jump (1.58m, 5' 2¼") and javelin (28.22m, 92' 7") en route to setting a PR in the heptathlon to finish third in the event, while putting together the second highest point total in school history with 4,440.

Also having a strong day in both the javelin and shot put was Brandi Huff, as she won the javelin with a throw of 39.70m (130' 3"), while posting the second-longest toss in the shot at 13.78m (45' 2½") — the third best of her career and furthest of the season.

Vivian Rodriguez also had a good showing in the shot, as she came in a couple spots behind Huff at fourth with a throw of 12.63m (41' 5¼").

In the vertical jumps Natasha Atkins had the second best leap of the year, as she finished second in the long jump with a mark of 5.43m (17' 9¾").

On the men's side it was Dustin Smith who had the best day, as he came in fifth in the javelin, posting the best throw of his career in the event with a toss of 41.11m (134' 10").

The Islanders will be back on the track Saturday for the final day of the Invitational. The field events will conclude following the only early morning race — the 5000-meters at 8 a.m. — as the triple jump, discus and high jump are all schedule for 10 a.m. with several Islanders set to compete in those events.

The running events will resume at noon with the men's 110-meter hurdles, which will be followed by the women's 100-meter hurdles at 12:15 p.m. A total of nine more races will then be ran throughout the day, with the men following the women in each. The Invitational is scheduled to conclude with the 4x400 meter relay at approximately 3:20 p.m.
