CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's track team had three individuals and a relay team named to the Southland Men's Indoor Track and Field All-Conference teams, the league announced Thursday.
Philipp Baar was named to the second team, as well as the Distance Medley Relay Team, while Angelo Garland and Valentinas Rudys rounded out those who were recognized for the Islanders with spots on the third team with their performances in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships.
It was Baar's silver medal performance in the 3000m that earned him this recognition, as he clocked an 8:30.58 in the event. Baar also teamed up with Paul Hansel, David Carrillo and Rudys to shatter a school record to finish second with a time of 10:00.80, as they all made their way onto the podium as well as the all-conference second team.
Rudys earned the individual acknowledgment in the mile, running a time of 4:13.79 to set a personal record with a mark that is second in the Islanders' record book, as this gave him a third-place finish to put him on the third all-conference team.
Joining him with that same honor was Garland who set a new school record in the 400m on day one of the Indoor Championships, and then bettered it on day two to pick up his bronze, as he crossed the line in 48.47.
The Islanders will open their 2014 outdoor season in a big way, as they host their first meet at the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium. The Country Inn and Suites Islanders Open collegiate meet is set for Saturday, March 15, with the high school meet prior to it on Thursday, March 13.
