CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi track and field teams will have a busy week ahead, as there will be Islanders participating in both the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and the Bayou Classic hosted by Rice.
A host of six individuals and a relay team will compete on Thursday and Friday in Austin at Mike A. Myers Stadium, while most of the team will participate in Houston on Friday and Saturday.
"Competing in the Relays is like being a part of the Texas Olympics," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "You're competing against some of the best athletes in the nation, so we are just hoping to go out and run our race and do the best we can.
"The meet at Rice is always excellent, it's just unfortunate that it is going to be the same weekend as the Texas Relays. We will still have quite a few student-athletes going, and we are excited for it because that is always a place we run well."
In day one of the three-day stretch of action Thursday, the Islanders will have a trio of long distance runners participating in the Texas Relays.
Philipp Baar and Paul Hansel will be running in the 1500m with Hansel in the first section at 7:20 p.m., with Baar to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. Baar currently ranks first in the Southland Conference in the event with his time of 3:50.23 in the UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational a week ago.
Following about 10 minutes after will be Cecilia Jones, as the senior will run in the 3000m steeplechase for the first time this season.
On Friday at the Relays, it will be sprinters who will be in competition, as Ebony Collins, Ashley Rosebrough and Marcus Smoots will all run in the sprints. Rosebrough currently ranks in the top 10 in the Southland in both the 100m at eighth with a 12.24 and the 400m, clocking the fourth-best time with a 57.09.
The lone relay team competing for the Islanders in Austin will be the men's 4x400 team, which currently has the second-best mark in the league with a 3:12.92.
On Friday in Houston, the first collegiate race will start after 7 p.m. with long distances races throughout the rest of the night. About 15 Islanders will be in action on Friday at the Bayou Classic.
In day two of the Classic on Saturday, most of the A&M – Corpus Christi teams will be in action, as the "B" sections of the races will start at noon, while the "A" sections start at 6 p.m. The field events will start at 11 a.m. for the final day of action.
In the field, the Islanders boast five different student-athletes who are in the top five in the Southland. Two coming from the high jump with Kerrisa Wiley ranking first, while Dallas Owen is fourth in the league on the men's side. Adrienne Nickleson is the other, as she currently is second in the shot put on the conference's leaderboard.
