Islanders Rout Huston-Tillotson, 99-33

Box Score

CORPUS CHRISTI - It was all Islanders as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team picked up a 99-33 win over NAIA member, Huston-Tillotson, Tuesday evening at the American Bank Center. The Islanders improved to 4-7 on the year behind Shay Weaver's career-high 35 points.

"Shay played phenomenal tonight," said head coach Royce Chadwick. "If we play her the normal 30 minutes, there is no telling what she would have done. I thought the whole team played really well with our 28 assists which means you're playing team basketball and you're executing."

A&M-Corpus Christi nearly broke the record for most points in the first half, falling just four points short, scoring 55. The Islanders started the game on a 24-7 run with Weaver scoring 18 points during the stretch. The Islanders shot 21-for-33 (63.6) from the field and 6-of-8 from behind the arc. Weaver finished the first half with 27, while senior Olivia Fouty scored 10.

Three Islanders finished in double-digits. Weaver with 35, Fouty with 15 and sophomore Camesha Davis with 10.

The Islanders shared the ball the best it has all year, recording a season-high 28 assists in the game. Junior Jennifer Ramirez led the squad with 11 assists. Seven of the 12 Islanders that played recorded two or more assists.

"We knew this was going to be a tune-up for conference play and we felt like there were some areas we had some advantages in and we were able to go out and exploit those," noted Chadwick. "We thought we had some advantages earlier in the year too, but we didn't exploit them like we wanted to, so this is exactly what we needed heading into conference play."

The team played squeaky-clean defense throughout the game, forcing the visiting Lady Rams into tough shots throughout. HTU shot just 13-of-54 (24.1) from the field and turned the ball over 24 times. The Islanders set top-10 records in points allowed in both halves, allowing 17 in the first and 16 in the second.

A&M-Corpus Christi set a new season-high with a field-goal percentage of 58.5 on 38-of-65 shooting. The team once again shined from the charity stripe, connecting on 14-of-18 on the night.

The Islanders will begin Southland Conference play Jan. 6 when they travel to Central Arkansas to take on the Sugar Bears.
