CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team used a 19-0 run around halftime to pull away from Jarvis Christian en route to an 87-55 victory on Tuesday at the American Bank Center. Ehab Amin led all scorers with a career-high 16 points and added a career-best six assists in the win.
Rashawn Thomas added 15 points and a career-best 14 rebounds in the victory for the Islanders (5-7) for his fourth double-double of the year. John Jordan (12 points) and Bryce Douvier (11) also finished in double digits to give the home squad four players with 10 points or more. Four other players had at least seven points as well. A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 3-0 this year and 11-2 in the last two seasons when placing at least four players in double figures.
DeWayne Wade and Deon Fisher led the way for Jarvis Christian, scoring 13 points apiece in a losing effort. The Islanders dominated the boards, 47-31, as all 12 players who participated snared a carom. A&M-Corpus Christi added a season-best nine blocks in the win.
A&M-Corpus Christi got out to a hot start, opening the game with the first nine points and stretching it to an 11-3 advantage behind a hot start from Thomas. He had five points, four rebounds and two blocks in the game's first 4:04 of action. The Bulldogs pulled it back to 11-8, but then the Islanders got three more from Thomas and a three-point play from Douvier to push the lead back to 17-8. A three by the Bulldogs cut it to 17-11.
The Islanders then embarked on a 13-2 run, starting with a three pointer from Viktor Juricek. Jelani Currie added four points during the run, and Cole Martinez also knocked down a key three in the rally. From there, the Bulldogs slowly chipped the lead back down to 13, but the Islanders finished the half on a 9-0 run, with a Thomas block starting a fast-break layup that sparked the rally. Jordan scored four points in the run and Douvier capped it off with a three to send the home squad into the locker room up 43-21.
Out of the break, the home squad continued to hold the momentum, scoring the first 10 points of the second half to push the lead to a game-high 32. Thomas started the half with a bucket underneath, and Amin knocked down a triple from the left wing to cap it off, making the score 53-21.
From there, things slowed down, but the Islanders were able to balloon their lead all the way to a game-high 40 on an Amin fast-break layup with 4:38 to play. Jarvis Christian was able to trim the lead to as low as 31 against the Islanders' less experienced lineup, which saw walk-ons David Bloom and Joel Engulu each register their first career point in the closing minutes.
The Islanders will return to the hardwood on Tuesday, Jan. 6, with the team's conference opener at Central Arkansas. The contest is tentatively slated to start at 8 p.m., but the start time will likely be later than that, as it is a doubleheader with the women's program. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
