Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team fell to UT Arlington,
42-28, at the Dugan Wellness Center Saturday.
The Islanders (2-5) scored a season low 28 points in the loss. Sophomore Camesha Davis tallied six points while grabbing seven rebounds and Toledo, Ohio native Olivia Fouty put in six points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Both teams played tight defense throughout, forcing 37 turnovers during the contest. The Mavericks (3-4) were able to capitalize on the turnovers though, outscoring the Islanders 13-8 on the night.
The Islanders took a 17-15 lead into the locker room thanks in part to its hustle on the boards in the first half. A&M-Corpus Christi was able to out rebound the Lady Mavericks 7-1 on the offensive glass, equating to a 7-0 advantage in second chance points.
The second half was all Mavericks though, as 6-foot-5 freshman Rebekah Van Dijk put in eight of her game-high 12 points. The forward was able to control the painted area, grabbing 12 rebounds on the night.
"I thought we did a great job of keeping them off the boards in the first half, but Van Dijk got going in the second half," noted head coach Royce Chadwick. "When they caught us a couple of times in the trapping zone, they got the ball right there underneath the basket, and they were able to score."
After Camesha Davis hit a layup with 14:47 remaining in the second half, the Islanders did not score another field goal until sophomore Kassie Jones hit a shot from behind the arc with 2:25 left in the game. During the stretch UTA outscored the Islanders 12-2.
"Both teams we're playing good defense, but UT Arlington hit a couple of three pointers that I thought were huge in the second half," noted Chadwick. "We shot the ball very poorly all night long and that was a tribute to their defense.
"When your starting guards are not able to get anything going and your bench is not able to get anything going either, it makes it a long night when you can't score."
The team will have a quick turnaround as they hit Stripes Court at the American Bank Center on Monday for matchup with the Lady Tigers of Tennessee State at 5 p.m. The Islanders men will take the floor against UTSA at 7 p.m.
