CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cross country teams will head to San Antonio this Saturday to compete in the
ninth annual Incarnate Word Invitational.
The meet will get underway with the men's 8k race at 8 a.m. and will be followed by the women's 6k race at 8:40 a.m. Among the 22 team field will be Abilene Christian, Texas State, UTSA, UT-Pan American, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT-Permian Basin, Texas A&M-International and host school Incarnate Word.
Both teams are coming off impressive performances at the Islanders Splash. The men finished first while the women took third in the annual event. Philipp Baar impressed once again as he finished the race first overall with a time of 25:14.9 while four other Islanders joined him in the top 10. Regina Salinas (18:23.5) paced the Islanders with a sixth-place finish in the 5k.
"This is the largest meet in the state of Texas with 22 teams running," said head coach Shawn Flanagan. "We're resting our seniors on the men's side in this meet and we expect our freshmen to to run well. The women are looking really good in practice and I am hoping that we will move forward in progression and move from a middle-of-the-pack team to a team up at the front of the pack."
Cross country finished last year's Incarnate Word Invitational with all seven runners in the top-30. Leading the pack for A&M – Corpus Christi was Edgar Martinez who set a personal best for both finish and time, running the 8k in 26:22.49 en route to a fourth place finish.
The Islanders men's team comes into the UIW Invitational ranked 11th in the USTFCCCA South Central Region.
