HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team shot an opening-round 312 to sit in a tie for fourth place at the Harold Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State. Ana Paredes shot a 72 in the first round to sit in a tie for second individually.
A two-hour rain delay in the morning backed up play, and the second round was suspended due to darkness with the teams through 16 holes. Second-round play will resume at 8:30 a.m. and the third round will follow immediately after.
"Our improvement continued today, and if we can continue to grow a little each tournament, we will be in a good place in the near future," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "It was outstanding to see Ana deliver her best round of collegiate golf. She's the veteran of this group, and she played like it today."
In addition to Paredes' 72, Julia Dereniwsky delivered a 78 to sit in a tie for 18th and Nagisa Miura carded a 79 to place 22nd. Anna Millet-Esteve and Olivia Lowe each shot 83 in the opening round, sitting in a tie for 26th through the first 18 holes.
Host SHSU leads the team scores with an opening-round 292, while Western Texas Community College shot an impressive 300 to sit second. Houston Baptist was third with a 302, followed by the Islanders and Tyler Junior College at 312.
Western Texas had three of the top five golfers, with individual leader Devanshi Naik leading the way with a 71. Iben Hvass shot a 72 to sit in a tie for second with Paredes and SHSU's Alisa White, and RaeChelle Leiken delivered a 73 to tie for fifth in the opening round.
