CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's cross country teams
will make the trip to Natchitoches, La., for the Southland Conference Championships on Monday.
The meet will be hosted by Northwestern State at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex. The men's 8-kilometer championship race will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the women's 6-kilometer championship race at 9:30 a.m.
"We're really excited about it and I think we are ready," said head coach Shawn Flanagan. "It's going to take a good effort from everyone and I think we can do really well on both side so I am very optimistic."
The Islanders come into the conference meet with the men winning three of their five meets this season, while the women have finished in the top-3 three times.
Senior Philipp Baar is looking to improve on his seventh place finish in last year's SLC Championship. Baar has competed in three events this year and finished fourth or better in each, including winning the Islanders Splash. The Schwerin, Germany native placed fourth out of 261 runners at the Alabama Crimson Classic while setting a new personal record in the 8k.
The Islander men finished third in last years SLC Championships while the women finished fifth.
The Lamar men's and women's teams are looking to repeat as conference champions. Last season the Cardinals won their seventh team championship in the last eight years. The Islanders women own four conference championships.
