Women's Tennis Wraps Play at Texas Regionals

WACO, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi women's tennis team wrapped play today at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships at Baylor University. 

Sophomore Judit Vives dropped a close singles match, 7-5, 6-3, to No. 4 seed Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M in the round of 32. The Barcelona, Spain native battled Pierson in the first set and took an early 4-3 lead before the pair tied at 4-4. After trading games to tie again at 5-5, Pierson secured the set with two straight games. In the second set, Vives led early at 2-1, before Pierson garnered the lead and the match at 6-3.

"Judit played a very tough match today against a very good opponent," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "She had a set point to win the first set. She really competed tough, and smart and had a great tournament."

Vives also teamed up with junior Celia Rodriguez in doubles action to start the day. After receiving a first-round bye, the duo faced Elizabeth Thoms and Angeles de los Rios of UT Arlington. The Islanders fought hard and were deadlocked at 4-4 before the Maverick pair eventually pulled away to win a close 8-6 match.

The Islanders men's team will start play on Saturday in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships in College Station, Texas. Senior Peter Nagy, along with juniors Guillaume Rauseo and Ricardo Mayagoitia will compete for the Islanders.

Rauseo and Mayagoitia will start off in singles play at 9 a.m. Rauseo is set to face Gustavo Gonzalez of Rice in the opening round while Mayagoitia will take on Guilherme Gesser of Abilene Christian.

Nagy will open singles play at 1 p.m. after receiving a first-round bye. The two-time reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year will face Max Montague of Texas A&M in the round of 64. 

The Islanders' tandem of Nagy and Rauseo received a first-round bye in doubles action and will take on the duo of Jacoby Lewis and Michael Riechmann of Texas at 4:30 p.m. in the round of 32.
