AUSTIN – Roger De La Cruz wrapped an impressive Islander career today at the NCAA West Preliminary Round at Mike A. Myers Stadium. De La Cruz was the lone Southland Conference competitor in the high jump and cleared a height of 2.07m (6' 9½").
"Roger went from being a little ragged at times and had trouble with nerves at the big meets and turned into a stellar performer," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "Now he's a Southland Conference Champion and a two-time regional qualifier. He's been a big success story."
De La Cruz improved his mark of 2.03m (6'8") from a year ago at the NCAA West Preliminary round and just missed his third attempt this evening at 2.12m (6' 11½").
After four years of competition as an Islander, the senior will leave his mark as the top high jumper in Texas A&M - Corpus Christi history with a school-record clearance of 2.15m (7' 0½"), set at the 2012 Southland Conference Championships.
This season, the San Antonio, Texas native garnered three titles in the high jump, including the 2013 Southland Conference Indoor title. He recorded six top five finishes with four of them coming during the outdoor season. He finished in second place at the 2013 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships and set a season-best and conference-leading jump of 2.10m (6'10¾"), set at the Texas Relays in March.
"To compete as an Islander it has been a blessing and to end my career here I feel like I've accomplished so much," De La Cruz said. "It's just a great feeling."
