FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi tennis players Matt Westmoreland and Pietro Jordao were named Southland All-Academic, the league announced on Thursday. Westmoreland earned first team honors, while Jordao came in on the second team.
It is the fourth time in the last five years that Islanders Men's Tennis has had a player on the all-academic teams, with Nathan Robinson earning first team honors last year, and Laurent Montoisy earned a spot on the 2009 and 2011 teams.
Westmoreland, a junior from Oahu, Hawaii, was a key part of the Islanders run to a sixth straight Southland Conference Championship, a league tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Championships.
He finished the season with a 14-9 record overall, including a 5-0 mark in Southland Conference matches. Westmoreland earned Second Team All-Southland recognition for both singles and doubles, getting the honor at No. 3 singles, and earning the double position alongside Ricardo Mayagoitia.
Jordao came on late in the year to solidify the No. 6 singles position for the Islanders, winning both conference matches he played in, and earning a win in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament to send the Islanders to the finals.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
