SCHEDULE
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams will be in action Saturday, April 13, when they return to Kingsville, Texas, for the Javelina Twilight Invitational at Javelina Stadium.
"We are getting toward the end of the season and this meet is a good stepping stone for our upcoming meets and the conference meet," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We are looking for a good outing with some peak performances as we prepare for next week at the Mt. SAC Relays and Rice Twilight."
The Islanders men's team will send 19 student-athletes while the women's team will send 21 to compete against Abilene Christian, Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico, Harding, Incarnate Word, Midwestern St., Texas A&M University - Commerce, Tarleton State, West Texas A&M, Trinity, Incarnate Word, West Texas A&M, Texas – Pan American and host Texas A&M University - Kingsville.
Isabella Baptiste will open the meet at 1 p.m. when she makes her debut in the women's javelin. She will then compete alongside Jontavia Dailey in the women's long jump at 3 p.m. before Shayla Green makes her debut in the women's discus. Michael Diamond will get things started on the men's side in the men's long jump before Quincy Obeng competes in the men's high jump at 6 p.m. Baptiste and Green will look to improve their shot put times before Dailey competes in the triple jump. Wrapping up the field events will be Allison Baker and Baptiste in the women's high jump and Diamond in the triple jump with both events slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
The running events will open with the men's 4x100 meter relay team of William Scott, Eric July, Diamond and David Carrillo at 5:30 p.m. The men's and women's 1500m will follow with BreAnna Briggs, Regina Salinas, Alexandra Fernandez, Cecilia Jones, Kayla Fischer and Kim Ward set to compete. Salinas leads the way with a season-best time of 4:49.75 set at Javelina Stadium during the Cactus Cup in March while Briggs paces the pack with a personal-best time of 4:41.55 set last season.
Daniel Barlow and Abel Koskey are scheduled to compete in the men's 1500m before Kayla Castillo competes in the women's 400m. The Islanders will then compete in the men's and women's 100m events with July and Ebony Collins on tap to compete. July holds the school record in the event with a time of 10.44 set last season. He clocked a season-best time of 10.65 this season at Javelina Stadium.
The Islanders will look for big performances in the men's and women's 800m event with a total of 13 Islanders set to compete in the event. For the men's team, Brandon Lacy, Valentinas Rudys, Philipp Baar, Paul Hansel, Cordarius Edmondson, Bryce Johnston, Wesley McGhee and Patrick Kimeli are set to compete. Rudys, Edmondson and Lacy hold the top three times in the Southland Conference with Rudys leading the way with a season-best time of 1:52.66.
For the women's team, Jasmine Boutte, Ashley Mills, Teresa Tauriello, Abigail Gennero and Fernandez are set to compete in the women's 800m. Boutte is second in the conference with a season-best time of 2:14.69 set at the Victor Lopez Classic in March.
Chelsey Arambula will follow in the women's 400 meter hurdles. She set a personal-best time of 1:15.97 set last weekend at the Texas State Invitational. July, Carrillo and Scott will compete in the men's 200m dash while Collins and Shanice Prendergast will run in the women's 200m dash. July leads the way with a personal and seasonal-best time of 21.58 set last weekend at the Texas State Invitational.
Both teams will wrap the day in the men's and women's 3000m run with a total of 15 scheduled to compete. Jones, Briggs, Salinas, Ward, Fischer, Vanessa Galindo, Alexandria Rossi and Samantha Hardin will compete for the women's team while Kimeli, Barlow, Hansel, Christoph Hintz, Justin Adame, Jacob Abrego and Jason Garcia will represent the men's team. Kimeli paces the men's team with a personal-best time of 8:34.90 set last season while Briggs leads the women's team with a personal-best time of 10:19.85 set in 2010.
The Islanders will be in action next on April 18-19 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. and at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight on Saturday, April 20, in Houston, Texas.
