RESULTS
HOUSTON – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams competed in four events Friday in the distance festival portion of the 31st annual Victor Lopez Classic, hosted by Rice University. The women's 1500m and the men's 5k highlighted the meet at Holloway Field/Ley Track.
"We had a very good day," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We looked strong in several events, especially in the women's 1500. All-in-all it was a good outing and the freshmen really stood out."
Sophomore Jasmine Boutte led the women's 1500m with a time of 4:47.40 to place third while freshmen Alexandra Fernandez and Ashley Mills followed in fifth and sixth place. Fernandez won her heat and finished in fifth place with a personal-best time of 4:49.90 while Mills crossed the line in sixth place with a time of 4:51.00. Senior BreAnna Briggs improved her mark to finish in 10th place with a time of 4:54.85 and freshman Kim Ward rounded out the event with a personal-best time of 5:01.11.
In the men's 1500m, Patrick Kimeli finished in 10th place with a time of 3:59.15 while Brandon Lacy clocked a time of 4:10.90 and Abel Koskey followed with a time of 4:11.55.
In the women's 5k, Vanessa Galindo and Regina Salinas both crossed the line with personal-best times. Galindo led the way in third place with a time of 18:01.62 while Salinas finished in fifth place with a mark of 18:19.82.
Sophomore Philipp Baar put together a strong performance in the men's 5k with a personal-best time of 14:40.56 to finish in third place. Christoph Hintz followed in sixth place with a time of 14:58.23. Justin Adame crossed the line in eighth place with a time of 15:04.29 while Paul Hansel finished just outside the top 10 with a time of 15:18.47.
In the men's 3000m steeplechase, Daniel Barlow finished in second place with a time of 9:38.12 while Cecilia Jones made improvements in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:36.06 to finish in seventh place in her first steeplechase race of the season.
The Islanders finished the day in the men's and women's 10k. Jason Garcia led the men's team with a third-place finish. He clocked a time of 32:45.71 while Jacob Abrego finished in sixth place with a time of 34.48.62
All three Islanders in the women's 10k finished in the top 10. Alexandria Rossi led the Islanders with a sixth-place finish. She clocked a time of 40:50.32 while Kayla Fischer finished with a time of 42:00.31 to finish in seventh place and Samantha Hardin followed in eighth place with a time of 42.14.58.
The Islanders will continue the classic Saturday at Holloway Field/Ley Track. The women's team will compete in 11 events while the men's team is set to compete in 10.
