Track and Field Clinches Six First-Place Finishes at Cactus Cup

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams clinched six first-place finishes on a very windy day at the annual Cactus Cup. The men's team finished in third place while the women's team took fifth place at Javelina Stadium.

"Overall we had some bright spots but there were also some spots where we would have liked to reverse some performances," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We need to keep getting better and get ready for Rice next weekend."

Leading the way for the men's team with first-place finishes were Patrick Kimeli, Roger De La Cruz and Philipp Baar. Kimeli led the 1500m with a time of 4:01.06 while Valentinas Rudys followed in second place with a time of 4:02.22 and Daniel Barlow finished in third with a time of 4:03.25 to take the top three spots in the event. Christoph Hintz finished two spots behind Barlow in fifth place with a time of 4:06.44.

Baar clinched first-place in the men's 3000m steeplechase in his debut of the event and had an exceptional performance in the gusty winds. The sophomore clocked a time of 9:22.29, to place fourth in the record books. Paul Hansel finished in second place with a personal-best time of 9:52.63.

De La Cruz won the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.02m while Quincy Obeng placed third with a mark of 1.87m. Michael Diamond placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 12.97m.

Justin Adame led for 12 laps in the 5k and finished in second with a time of 15:54.03. Jason Garcia crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 16:01.12 and Jacob Abrego placed eighth with a time of 17:24.85.

David Carrillo had a strong performance in the men's 100m to finish fifth with a personal-best time of 10.62, which places fourth all-time. Eric July followed in sixth place with a time of 10.65.

In the men's 800m, Rudys led the way in fifth place with a time of 2:00.55 while William Scott and Brandon Lacy placed in the top 10.

William Scott, Wesley McGhee, Carrillo and Cordarius Edmondson teamed up in the men's 4x400 meter relay to place third with a time of 3:24.71 while Carrillo, July, Scott and Michael Diamond placed fourth in the men's 4x100 meter relay to place fourth.

The women's team was powered by Jasmine Boutte, Regina Salinas and Samantha Hardin who all picked up first-place finishes.

Boutte took the top spot in the 800m with a time of 2:16.78 while Ashley Mills followed in fourth place with a time of 2:19.82.

Salinas clinched her first career first-place in the 1500m. The freshman led the way with a time of 4:49.75 while Vanessa Galindo followed in fifth place with a time of 4:55.96 and rounding out the top 10 was BreAnna Briggs and Cecilia Jones.

Hardin also captured her first career first place in the 5k with a time of 19:48.69 while Kayla Fischer placed fifth with a time of 20:25.50. Alexandria Rossi finished in the top 10 in ninth place.

Freshman Alexandra Fernandez crossed the line in second place in the 3000m steeplechase. She clocked a personal-best time of 12:36.67 in her debut of the event while freshman Kim Ward also clocked a personal-best time of 13:00.28 to seal fifth place.

Ashley Rosebrough, Shanice Prendergast and Ebony Collins put together stellar finishes in the women's 100m and 200m. Rosebrough finished in second place in the 100m with a time of 12.03 and fifth in the 200m with a time of 25.66. Prendergast placed 11th in the 100m and eighth in the 200m while Collins placed 10th in the 100m and tied for sixth in the 200m with a time of 25.89.

Kayla Fischer and Allison Baker placed in the top 10 of the women's 400m while Sidney Siepert crossed the line in seventh place in the 400 meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:10.25.

Isabella Baptiste placed ninth in the 100 meter hurdles with a mark of 16.20 while newcomer Micah Nolan had a great start in her first meet to place fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.62m (5'4"), which is good for the third best performance in school history. Baker placed eighth with a clearance of 1.52m.

Jontavia Dailey marked personal bests in the long jump and triple jump. She placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.08m and placed 12th in the long jump with distance of 5.18m.

Newcomer Shayla Green placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 9.33m, which places ninth in the performers list, while Baptiste placed 11th with a mark of 8.55m.

Prendergast, Rosebrough, Collins and Baptiste teamed up in the 4x100 meter relay to place fourth with a time of 48.37 and Prendergast, Siepert, Boutte and Castillo clocked a time of 4:04.18 in the 4x400 meter relay to finish in fourth place.
