RESULTS
NORMAN, Okla. – Roger De La Cruz led the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams on the final day of competition at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships at Mosier Indoor Track. The senior took home first place in the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.10m while Jasmine Boutte and Valentinas Rudys each placed third in the men's and women's 800m.
"We competed much better on the second day of competition," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "All of them had improvements in their performances and we were really pleased. The men scored three times as many points as they did last year and and we are looking for better things to happen during the outdoor season."
De La Cruz led the conference going into the meet and finished his final indoor season on a positive note. Quincy Obeng finished behind De La Cruz in a tie for sixth place with a clearance of 1.95m.
Boutte paced the women's team with a time of 2.16.85 in the women's 800m finals while Rudys claimed third with a season-best time of 1:54.33 in the men's 800m finals. Brandon Lacy also had an impressive run in the event to finish in sixth place with a time of 1:56.42, improving his mark from yesterday's prelims.
Also finishing in sixth place was Philipp Baar in the men's 3k. The sophomore clocked a personal-best time of 8:34.70. His previous best was set this season at the Cowboy Indoor Invite with a time of 8:34.99. Finishing three spots behind Baar was Christoph Hintz in ninth place with a personal-best time of 8:40.07. Justin Adame and Jacob Abrego also ran well in the men's 3k. Adame finished in the top 20 with a time 8:51.98 and Abrego clocked a time of 8:54.28.
Paul Hansel and Daniel Barlow both recorded lifetime-bests in the men's one mile to clock fifth and sixth-place finishes. Hansel recorded a time of 4:16.77 while Barlow finished with a time of 4:17.27.
After picking up a third-place finish yesterday in the women's 5k, Vanessa Galindo sealed an eighth-place finish in the women's 3k with a personal-best time of 10:30.04. Also clocking a lifetime-best was Regina Salinas, who finished in 12th place with a mark of 10:43.94. Alexandra Fernandez placed three spots behind Salinas with a time of 10:56.67 while freshmen Samantha Hardin and Kim Ward rounded out the scoring in the event. Hardin also clocked a personal-best with a time of 11:11.58 while Ward finished with a time of 11:18.72.
Salinas and Ward also competed in the finals of the women's one mile and crossed the line with personal-best times. Salinas finished just inside the top 10 in eighth place with a time of 5:12.44 while Ward recorded a time of 5:23.00.
Jontavia Dailey marked a personal-best distance of 10.80m in the women's triple jump while improving her mark of 10.71m set at the Cowboy Indoor Invite. Dailey also competed in the women's long jump. Isabella Baptiste finished with 2488 points in the women's pentathlon. Baptiste is the first Islander to compete in the event since Jennifer Pacheco did so in 2008.
The men's 4x440 yard relay team of William Scott, Cordarius Edmondson, Bryce Johnston and David Carrillo finished in sixth with a season-best time of 3:23.41. Sidney Siepert, Kayla Castilo, Allison Baker and Shanice Prendergast teamed up in the women's 4x440 yard relay and finished with a time of 4:08.29.
The men's team finished in eighth place while the women's team placed 10th. Stephen F. Austin swept both the men's and women's team titles.
The men's and women's teams will open the outdoor season at the UIW Invitational in San Antonio on March 1-2.
