NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomore Vanessa Galindo led the Islanders women's track team today with a third-place finish in the women's 5k at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships at Mosier Indoor Track. The Islanders advanced five to the finals tomorrow in addition to the 15 already set for competition, for a total of 20 Islanders competing on the final day.
"Vanessa did really well for us today in the women's 5k and we had some strong finishes in the men's one mile and both 800m races," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We have our best events to come Saturday and are looking for good results."
Galindo placed third in the women's 5k with a season-best time of 18:12.48. Paul Hansel and Daniel Barlow had a strong day in the men's one mile. Barlow finished fourth with a qualifying time of 4:20.42 while Hansel finished in eighth with a qualifying time of 4:21.50. Also, advancing to the finals tomorrow are Jasmine Boutte, Valentinas Rudys and Brandon Lacy in the women's and men's 800m. Boutte crossed the line in fourth place with a personal-best time of 2:16.56 (2nd all-time) while Rudys also finished fourth in the men's race with a season-best time of 1:56.41. Lacy finished just inside the top 10 in eighth place with a time of 1:58.14.
Shanice Prendergast shattered the school record in the women's 400m to place 15th. The freshman clocked a time of 59.66 breaking Kenyata Mathews school-best time of 59.69 set back in 2002.
Eric July crossed the line in 16th place in the men's 60m with a personal-best time of 7.06, which is good for second-place all time. Also recording a personal-best time was Justin Adame in the men's 5k to finish in seventh place. The sophomore clocked a time of 15:06.00, which is good for third place in program history. Christoph Hintz followed in ninth place with a personal-best time of 15:17.27 while David Carrillo finished with a time of 22.86 in the men's 200m and clocked a time of 50.70 in the men's 400m.
Hansel, Cordarius Edmondson, Lacy and Barlow teamed up in the men's distance medley relay to finish in fifth place with a time of 10:19.87.
The women's team sits in ninth place while the men's team is in eighth after the first day of competition. The Islanders will look for strong performances tomorrow as both teams will compete in six events to wrap the indoor championships.
