Logen Bourque and Ivy Baresh Garner SLC First Team All-Academic Honors

FULL SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE RELEASE

CORPUS CHRISTI – Logen Bourque and Ivy Baresh were named to the Southland Conference All-Academic First Team, the league announced today. For Bourque, it marks the third consecutive year she has been named all academic while Baresh picks up her first all-academic honor.

"I'm very happy for Logen and Ivy, and proud of their recognition on the Southland Conference Academic First Team," head coach Tony Graystone said. "After already being named first team all conference on the court, this is a real exclamation point to their season and a great reward for their efforts."

The pair was dominant this season, helping the Islanders to their first conference tournament victory in program history and a school-best 13-5 conference mark. Bourque propelled the Islanders' offense with 11.39 assists per set, while Baresh led the team with 3.38 kills per set.

Bourque wraps an outstanding career as the most decorated student-athlete in program history. She holds a 3.91 GPA in interdisciplinary studies and has received her 4-8 teacher certification in mathematics. The senior has achieved a 4.0 the last three full-time semesters and has an A in all major course work. She will complete her student teaching in the spring of 2014 and is on track to graduate in May.

The Houston native will leave the Island University as the all-time career-assist leader in Islanders' history with 4,516 assists. She also set the all-time assist mark for a single season with 1,310 assists and moved into second place in the record books with 1,096 career digs.

Bourque was also a First Team All-Southland pick and was named to the Southland Conference All-Tournament team for the first time in her career. She was recently named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I Honorable Mention All-Region Team and the Capital One Academic All-District 7 Second Team.

Baresh is majoring in kinesiology with a pre-physical/pre-occupational therapy concentration and holds a 3.03 GPA. She led the Islanders in kills, aces and digs, while being a consistent all-around player for the Islanders. During the season, she collected 16 double-doubles and earned First Team All-Southland accolades. The sophomore is fifth all-time in career digs (711), and for a single season she sits third in kills (379) and eighth in digs (399) with two more seasons left to play.  

"I really appreciate Logen and Ivy's commitment to being high academic achievers and setting the example for all of our student-athletes," Graystone added. "I also want to thank Lauren Power for her work with the volleyball team and our faculty members who are constantly there for our players and are fully committed to our academic success."

The all‐academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/counselors from each Southland institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all‐academic team.
