CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Lake Charles, La. to compete at the Cowboy Indoor Invitational, hosted by McNeese State on Friday, Jan. 18. The Islanders will compete against 10 teams at the McNeese State Recreation Complex in its second indoor meet of the season.
"McNeese is a great place for our distance runners," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We are hoping for decent times. The team has been training hard and we will work our way through this meet."
The Islanders are set to compete against Dillard, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, New Orleans, Southern and Southland foes Lamar, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern La., and host McNeese State.
The women's team is scheduled to compete in the shot put, long jump, triple jump, 400m, 800m, one mile, 3k, 55m hurdles and the 4x400 meter relay. Isabella Baptiste will compete in the women's shot put and the 55m hurdles while Jontavia Dailey is slated to compete in the women's long jump and triple jump. Abigail Gennero and Claudia Zavala will lead the women in the 400m while Jasmine Boutte, Ashley Mills, Chelsey Arambula, Alexandra Fernandez, Allison Baker, Paola Perez, Teresa Tauriello and Gennero will pace the women's 800m. Last weekend, Boutte clocked a second-place finish in the event.
Boutte will also be competing in the women's one mile along with Mills, Fernandez and freshman Kim Ward. Vanessa Galindo is looking to improve her second-place finish in the women's 3k from last weekend. She is set to compete in the event along with Regina Salinas, Kayla Fischer, Samantha Hardin, Alexandria Rossi and Ward.
Rounding out the women's event is the 4x400 meter relay team of Baker, Baptiste, Arambula and Rossi.
The men's team is slated to compete in the long jump, triple jump, 800m, one mile, 3k, 55m, 600m and the 4x400 meter relay.
Daniel Barlow is looking to improve his second-place finish in the 3k along with Philipp Baar, Christoph Hintz, Paul Hansel, Jason Garcia, Jacob Abrego, Angel Banda and Abel Koskey. Brandon Lacy along with Koskey will lead the men's one mile while Valentinas Rudys and Bryce Johnston are scheduled to compete in the 800m.
In the men's 55m, William Scott, Wesley McGhee, Cordarius Edmondson and Rudys are slated to compete. Edmondson, McGhee and Scott will also lead the men's team in the 600m for the first time this season.
Quincy Obeng and Michael Diamond are looking for strong performances in the long jump and triple jump while Edmondson, McGhee, Lacy and Hansel will round out the men's event in the 4x400 meter relay.
Last season on the men's side at the Cowboy Invite, the Islanders took six of the top 10 places in the one mile, led by Rudys fourth-place finish. Lacy and Rudys advanced to the indoor championships in the 800m with third and fourth-place finishes while Hintz placed second in the 3k.
On the women's side, Boutte finished in seventh place in the one mile while Galindo had an impressive first race as an Islander with a fourth-place finish in the 3k.
"We are hoping for some good things and it's a stepping stone toward the Southland Conference Championships," Flanagan added.
The Islanders will wrap the regular indoor season on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Red Raider Open in Lubbock, Texas.
