RESULTS
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams had a strong start to the indoor season Saturday at the Texas Tech Indoor Open. The Islanders clocked five second-place finishes against 15 other schools at the TTU Athletic Training Center.
"It was a good solid performance for the first time out this season," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We did some good things and it's an encouraging start. Now we just have to keep getting better."
Leading the way for the men's team was Daniel Barlow who claimed a second-place finish in the 3k (8:53.05) and a third-place finish in the mile. Among the other second-place finishers was Philipp Baar in the one mile and Brandon Lacy in the 800m. On the women's side, Vanessa Galindo led the way with a second-place finish in the 3k (10:45.01) and she placed sixth in the one mile. Jasmine Boutte also clocked a second-place finish in the women's 800m.
In the men's one mile, Baar led the way in second place with a time of 4:20.72 and Barlow followed in third with a time of 4:21.11. Paul Hansel finished with a time of 4:27.22 to place seventh and Christoph Hintz finished right outside the top 10 in 11th place with a time of 4:29.52. Behind Hintz was Justin Adame in 12th with a time of 4:31.70. Abel Koskey (14th, 4:34.53), Jacob Abrego (18th, 4:36.42) and Angel Banda (20th, 4:40.49) rounded out the men's one mile.
David Carrillo led the way in the 400m with a school-best time of 49.86 to place third. William Scott followed with a time of 51.13 to place 10th. Carrillo also had a strong performance in the 200m with a personal-best time of 22.43 to place seventh. Scott finished in 11th with a time of 23.18 and Michael Diamond clocked a time of 24.38 in his first meet as an Islander.
Lacy paced the men's team in the 800m with a time of 1:57.14 to place second and Cordarius Edmondson finished in fifth place with a time of 2:00.75. Bryce Johnston, in his debut meet as an Islander, followed in sixth with a time of 2:02.29 and Wesley McGhee clocked a time of 2:09.34 to place ninth.
Roger De La Cruz cleared a distance of 1.93m in the men's high jump and the men's 4x400 meter relay team placed eighth with a time of 3:25.12.
On the women's side, Boutte led the way in the 800m with a time of 2:20.72 to place second while Ashley Mills followed in fourth place with a time of 2:26.07. Also finishing in the top 10 was Alexandra Fernandez in seventh (2:32.59), Allison Baker (2:33.36) in eighth and Teresa Tauriello in ninth (2:35.65).
Galindo led the women's one mile with a time of 5:24.39 to place sixth while Regina Salinas recorded a time of 5:29.30 to finish in 11th place.
In the women's 400m, Sidney Siepert clocked a time of 1:00.66 to place ninth and freshmen Shanice Prendergast placed 10th. Ashley Rosebrough led the Islanders in the 55m with a time of 7.48 to place 16th and she finished with a time of 26.92 in the 200m.
Both teams will be in action next Friday, Jan. 18, in Lake Charles, La. at McNeese State.
