SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's track and field teams competed in three events Friday at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos, Texas. The Islanders qualified three to the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships and set many lifetime bests at Texas State University Track and Field Stadium.
"They ran well today," Director of Track and Field Shawn Flanagan said. "BreAnna and Vanessa ran lifetime bests in the 1500m, while Angel and Danielle qualified for the conference championships. The Islanders ran some good times and we had some that qualified, so overall, we had a good day."
The 10th-regional ranked women's team started the day in the 1500m. BreAnna Briggs finished second with a lifetime best of 4:41.55 to qualify for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. Her time ties for ninth place in the Islanders record book. Vanessa Galindo also ran a lifetime best of 4:53.95 to place eighth. Three spots behind Galindo was Shelby Polasek, who clocked a time of 5:00.86. Kayla Fischer finished right behind Polasek with a time of 5:01.29 to place 12th and Jennifer Ramirez finished in 13th place with a time of 5:03.56. Teresa Tauriello rounded out the Islanders in 17th place, clocking a time of 5:41.11.
Senior Danielle Higgins won the women's 5k with a time of 18:33.57 to qualify for the outdoor championships.
On the men's side, the Islanders had three place in the top 10 in the 1500m. Freshman Angel Banda placed fourth with a time of 4:00.54 to qualify for the outdoor championships while Adrian Marquez and Justin Adame finished sixth and seventh. Marquez clocked a time of 4:02.55 and Adame crossed the line with a time of 4:03.28. Jason Garcia and Julian Pfeiffer finished back-to-back with Garcia clocking a time of 4:08.99 to finish in 13th place and Pfeiffer crossed the line in 14th place with a time of 4:13.94.
The Islanders will continue competition tomorrow at Texas State University Track and Field Stadium. The women's team will start things off in the triple jump while Roger De La Cruz and Quincy Obeng will start the men's team in the high jump.
