CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball player Verne'qua Taylor has been named the GoIslanders.com Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Pepsi. Taylor earned the award following her double-figure scoring efforts last week.
Taylor posted a career-high 20 points to lift the Islanders to a 70-63 victory over Nicholls State Wednesday night at the American Bank Center. The Wharton, Texas native, led all scorers with her seventh double-digit scoring game while dishing out six assists and tallying two steals in 36 minutes. She also went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe while shooting 7-for-11 from the field.
On Saturday, Taylor scored her first double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 10 assists, while tallying seven rebounds, three shy of a triple double, and adding five steals. She now holds the Islanders all-time assist record as a junior with 110 assists this season.
Taylor is leading the conference with an average of 5.0 assists a game. She has tallied six or more assists in 10 games this season and six of those she has eight or more assists. She is averaging 7.5 points per game, 4.2 rebounds in a team-high 31.3 minutes per game.
Taylor and the women's basketball team will travel to Huntsville, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 11, to take on Sam Houston State.
