The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team had two players named to the year end All-Southland Conference teams on Wednesday, with senior Shannon Hullum earning First Team All-Southland honors and junior Brooke Alverson was voted to the second team, while sophomore Brianna Brink was named honorable mention. The honors are voted on the league coaches and sports information directors.
Hullum (Van, Texas) is a right side hitter that finished the final regular season of her career on a high note, helping the team to a school record in wins, and the third seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament.
She led the team in kills (304) this season, and at the end of the regular season was in the top five all-time in matches played (121), sets played (401), kills (854), total blocks (174) and block assists (162). Additionally, she is currently sixth in service aces (64) for an Islanders career. The honor was the first of her Islanders career and caps off a very successful career on the Island.
Alverson (Rhome, Texas) is a middle blocker who is one of the keys to the Islanders defense and a big part of the success the team has enjoyed this season. Despite missing some time during conference play with an injury, Alverson still led the team in block solos (16), block assists (81) and total blocks (97) while also picking up 199 kills and 25 service aces. It is the second honor of Alverson's career after being named honorable mention a year ago.
Brink (Corona, Calif.) was the first honorable mention selection after totaling the second-most kills on the team with 283. It is the first conference honor of her career.
Hullum, Alverson, Brink and the rest of the Islanders team will be back in action in Conway, Ark. on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Oral Roberts. The Golden Eagles will be the first round opponent in the tournament that is being held on the Central Arkansas campus.
Live stats and video will be available on the league's website at www.Southland.org.
