LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi track and field teams performed well on the first day of competition Friday at the Texas Tech Indoor Open in Lubbock, Texas. The meet featured the jumpers and sprinters and will continue tomorrow starting at 10 a.m.
"Roger De La Cruz and Ashley Rosebrough had a really good meet," head coach Randy Bungard said. "Ashley has been showing potential in practice and it was good to see her do well in the meet. She is a lot further ahead this time than she was last year."
In the women's 200m, Rosebrough finished in third place clocking a time of 24.84, which is good for second all-time in the Islanders record book. Kassandrea Son holds the record with a time of 24.86, which was broke at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships last year on a different sized track than the one at Texas Tech.
Joining Rosebrough in the 200m was Sidney Siepert with a time 27.01, Desirae Perryman clocked a time of 27.61 and rounding out the scoring was Courtney Padron with a time of 28.13.
The women also competed in the long jump to finish out the day. Son and Ernestine Cray both jumped in Flight A and finished first and second. Son sealed the top spot with a distance of 5.63m (18-05.75), which is good for second in the Islanders top 10. Cray took the runner-up spot with a distance of 5.55m (18-02.50), tying her jump from a year ago at the Howie Ryan All-Comers Meet, which is good behind Son's mark in the Islanders top 10.
"I was pleased with both Kassandrea's and Ernestine's opening performances in the long jump for their first meet of the year," Bungard said. "Under the circumstances of arriving here at 3:30 p.m. and then having to jump at 5 p.m., I was proud of how they did."
On the men's side, David Carrillo was the top Islander to finish in the 200m in 18th place with a time of 22.63. Matt Youngblood finished behind Carrillo in 24th place, clocking a time of 22.94 and two spots behind Youngblood was Dallas Crain with a time of 22.97. William and Patrick Scott finished right behind each other to round out the Islanders. William Scott clocked a time of 23.35 and Patrick Scott finished with a time of 23.40.
"I was really pleased with David's performance in the 200m," Bungard said. "He competed well. We had three guys run under 23 and for some of them it was the first time they have been on an indoor track, so I was happy with their performance."
De La Cruz improved his mark from last weekend in the high jump and finished fourth. The junior cleared 2.04m (6-08.25), which is good for second place in the Islanders top 10 records. Quincy Obeng finished in seventh with a clearance of 1.89m (6-02.25).
The Islanders will continue competition tomorrow against 20 other teams: Texas Tech, South Plains College, Texas Pan-Am, Abilene Christian, Barton County CC, Butler County CC, Hardin Simmons, Incarnate Word, Lubbock Christian, McMurry, New Mexico JC, Northwood, SMU, TAMU- Kingsville, Texas Lutheran, Texas Southern, Texas Wesleyan, UTSA, Wayland Baptist and West Texas A&M.
The men and women will compete in the 55m, 400m, 4 x 400m and the women will also compete in the triple jump.
"Based off of our performance today I'm excited about our sprinters in the 55m tomorrow and it'll be fun to watch the 400m," Bungard added. "It will show their speed and I'm excited to see how they do."
