Islanders Softball Adds Briana Bishop as Assistant Coach

CORPUS CHRISTI – Briana Bishop will join the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi staff as an assistant coach for the Islanders' softball program, announced today by head coach Stephanie Hughes.

Bishop, a native of College Station, Texas, comes to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi after spending the past two years as a graduate student manager for the Texas A&M softball program. Prior to that, she was a four-year letterwinner under former All-American Gay McNutt and coach Craig Snider at Stephen F. Austin.

"I am extremely excited to have Briana on staff here at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi," said head coach Stephanie Hughes. "She brings a ton of energy to the program and wealth of knowledge of the Southland Conference."

At SFA, Bishop garnered several academic and athletic awards on and off the field. She was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester, including the President's List in the fall and spring of 2010. In addition, she was named to the Dean's List in the fall of 2006, 2007 and 2008 and the spring of 2009. In her final two years with the Jacks, she was named First Team Southland All-Academic.

During her junior campaign she set a new SFA home run record for a single-season with 12 and also holds the school's career mark with 25. Bishop went on to break two more records for doubles and RBIs during her senior year. Bishop was named SFA's Scholar Athlete of the Year in addition to Female Athlete of the Year and earned First Team All-Conference accolades her junior and senior year.

"As a former all-conference player she will bring the experience we need to our young infielders," Hughes added. "The team will only build on last year's success with her on staff."

In her time with the Aggies, Bishop assisted with hitting and fielding drills, while learning different techniques for each skill under head coach Jo Evans. In addition, she helped with hitting charts during every game and observed ways to manage a collegiate team and different camps under Evans' guidance. At Texas A&M, Bishop also worked as a camp counselor and coach, instructing skill techniques to the campers, along with teaching situation drills during scrimmages.

As a student-athlete, Bishop assisted with SFA softball camps twice a year, gaining valuable experience and knowledge. She created different drills to improve the skills of her campers along with assisting with decision making and time management skills.

Bishop received her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from SFA in May 2010 and is currently working on her master's in sports management at Texas A&M.
