Brooke Alverson is writing a blog throughout the volleyball season called "On The Block With Brooke". In this entry, Alverson talks about the first home matches of the season and her quirkiness. Check back periodically for more insight on the Islanders Volleyball program from the sophomore middle blocker.
Last weekend we had our home opener and I have to say we did pretty amazing things. We had a great, supportive crowd, which my little brother told me was actually fun to sit and watch me play after enduring all the other volleyball matches he has seen before, and we had standout plays.
The team came together really well and we feel confident for our conference matches. The nice thing about playing on our home court is not having crazy travel schedules and the security of our home turf. I enjoy being able to sleep in my own bed and having my friends and family able to watch me play.
We had some awesome recruits out and that is always fun getting new prospective athletes to go out to eat or hang out with and get to know everyone. That's when unforgotten stories come out from the past or the recruits stay in our locker room and watch us all pump up for our upcoming match. To get the team pumped and excited I like to show off my theatric dance moves.
I'm sure I shocked the recruits with my eccentricness and tried to explain how I'm usually mild-mannered and just like to chill. My teammates disagreed and ratted me out as the complete opposite. It's hard not getting pumped up without dancing to the awesome beats of Logen's (Bourque) iPod. We usually jam out to "Get outta your mind", Beyoncé songs, "Crazy Train", but I especially get super pumped up to any Miley Cyrus song. Our locker room is the one place that we always come together to get ready and be prepared to win.
We really appreciated all the support of the fans from the weekend! Thanks to everyone! Go Islanders!
