Schumann Named Head Coach at Florida Internationl

CORPUS CHRISTI - Former Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball head coach Jake Schumann has been hired for the same position at Florida International University, the school announced on Wednesday. A national search for Schumann's successor will begin immediately.

"Congratulations to Jake for being selected at Florida International University," Director of Athletics Tim Fitzpatrick said.  "During his tenure at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi, Jake worked very hard to elevate our softball program to a position of prominence in the Southland Conference.  Our on-field performance improved considerably under his guidance, culminating in this year's team finishing first in the SLC.  In the classroom, his student-athletes have distinguished themselves as well.

"We wish Jake and his family the very best in their new opportunity, and sincerely thank him for his service to our athletic program and university."

During his time on the Island, Schumann amassed a 120-104 record as the head coach, improving his team's win total every season, including a 41-19 record and a Southland Conference Regular Season Championship this past year. The team also advanced to the finals of the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time in school history, as Schumann was named Southland Coach of the Year.

He became the Islanders' all-time leader in wins this year, surpassing the previous mark of 112 held by Missy Dickerson. The 41 wins during the 2011 season was the second-most in school history behind the 42-11 mark by the 2005 team.
