San Marcos - Texas A&M - Corpus Christi track and field
teams returned to Bobcat Stadium for the second time in three meets
on Saturday. The Islanders continued to qualify team members in
their last outing before the conference outdoor championships in
two weeks.
In the women's 3000m run three Islanders finishing in the top
five with Kristine Torres first, Julia Sambu second and BreAnna
Briggs finishing in fourth place. Torres paced the field with a
time of 10:09.20, Sambu was in at 10:10.81 and Briggs crossed the
finish line at 10:43.01. Both Torres and Sambu shattered the school
record in the event that was 10 minutes and 15 seconds.
Patrick Kimeli finished first in the 1500m with a time of
3:44.87 joining him in the top ten were Adrian Marquez in eighth
4:01.87 and Jason Garcia tenth 4:06.51. On the women's side
Danielle Higgins was first with a 4:42.38 time also posting a top
five finish was Shelby Nichols who qualified for conference with a
4:47.14 time after coming in fifth.
Ernestine Cray had a season best mark of 5.81m in the women's
long jump finishing in second place, but was the highest collegiate
finisher. Viktoriya Rybalko won the event with a mark of 6.68m
competing unattached. In the men's long jump Patrick Scott came in
third place with a 6.78m jump, Scott also qualified for the
conference championship with the leap.
Jasmine Oyewumi finished in fifth place in the 100m hurdles
crossing the finish line 14.64 seconds, which was also her season
best time which previously was 14.72 a few weeks ago in San
Marcos.
Eric July qualified for conference in the men's 200m finishing
fourth with a time of 21.63 seconds. Matt Youngblood finished
seventh with a time of 22.08 seconds.
Brandi Huff bettered her school in the high jump finishing third
at 1.67, she also was seventh in the shot with a mark of 12.41m. In
the 4x400m relay the Islanders finished in third place with a time
of 3:55.12 running were Sidney Siepert, Oyewumi, Felisha Salinas
and Ashley Rosebrough.

The Islanders will have next week off before competing at the
Southland Conference Outdoor Championships May 13-15 in
Natchitoches, La.
