THIBODAUX, La. - The Texas A&M - Corpus
Christi softball team picked up another Southland Conference series
win on Sunday, taking a 3-1 final over the Nicholls Colonels to win
two-of-three on the weekend.
The Islanders improve to 26-7 on the season
and reached double-digit wins in conference with a 10-2 league
record. The Colonels fall
to 8-16 this year and 2-6 in Southland games.
Jordan
Trujillo pitched a complete game to improve her record to 11-4
on the season. She allowed
just one unearned run on five hits while walking one batter and
striking out eight in the game, her second-highest total of the
season.
Lauren
Sanders led the offensive attack for Texas A&M - Corpus
Christi while going 3-for-3 in the game. Hannah
Schwarz had two hits in the game, including her fourth bunt
single of the series. Sandy
Schumann, Kacie
Smith, Lauren
Dodson and Laura
Phillips each had one hit in the game. Dodson added two of the teams RBI
while Jamise
Jackson had the only other one in the game.
In the first inning, Schwarz led off the game
with a bunt single, her fourth bunt single of the weekend, to reach
first base. Schumann hit a
fly out and Caley
Jeter grounded out to move Schwarz to second but put the
Islanders down to their final out of the inning.
Smith reached on a walk to bring Dodson to the
plate. Dodson then hit a
1-2 pitch to the left center field wall for a double to score both
Schwarz and Smith and give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the bottom
of the fourth when Nicholls scored a single run on an RBI double by
Katie Holmes, her seventh RBI of the series, to make it a 2-1
ballgame.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi extended the
lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth win one run on two hits to put
the margin back at two runs. Phillips started it off with a double
to center field and was then pinch-run for by Cassie
Redman. Sanders followed with a single to move Redman to third
and put runners on the corners. After Sanders stole second base to
put runners at second and third, Jackson came to the plate and hit
a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Redman to score and make it
a 3-1 game.
Trujillo did the rest, allowing just one hit
over the final two innings to secure her 11th win of the
season.
Next up for the Islanders is a pair of midweek
games against No. 12 Texas. The two teams will play on Wednesday
starting at 5 p.m. in Austin.
