Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis
player Laurent Montoisy picked up his second Southland Men's Tennis
Player of the Week award on Tuesday after the senior captain led
his No. 62-ranked team to a 5-2 victory over the Nicholls Colonels
on Sunday. It is the
second weekly honor for Montoisy this year with the award being
voted on by the league's sports information directors.
After sitting out the doubleheader against
Prairie View A&M on Thursday, Montoisy returned to action in
dominating fashion, taking a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Damjan
Despotovski at the No. 1 singles position. Earlier in the dual match, he teamed
up with Gergo Weidinger to take an 8-5 win over Damjan Despotovski
and Palash Tiwari in No. 1 doubles.
The win pushed Texas A&M - Corpus Christi
to 6-4 on the season, with the last five coming in-a-row as the
team has achieved a No. 62 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) polls.
The win also gave the Islanders their 17th win in their last 18
regular season Southland matches, a period that spans four
seasons.
Montoisy is 18-1 in singles matches against
Southland Conference opponents over his career and has done just
well off the court, holding a 3.0 GPA in finance.
"What I'm most proud of about Laurent is the
great leader he has become and how mentally tough he's become on
the court," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "No matter what
gets thrown his way, he stays in the present, shows poise and makes
the right adjustments to win.
"He has grown tremendously in that area.
Laurent's leadership is one of the key reasons this team has such
great chemistry and is competing so hard as a group."
The last time Montoisy received the award was
the week following his team's defeat of then No.49 TCU. The Horned Frogs have risen to a
current ranking of No. 47 in the nation since the loss to the
Islanders.
The next time the team will be in action, it
will be against the No. 7 Texas Longhorns on March 5 in
Austin. It will be Texas
A&M - Corpus Christi's seventh match against a team that has
been ranked by the ITA this season.
