MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi golf team sits in sixth place with the majority of the first two rounds in the books at the Memphis Women's Invitational on Monday. Play at Ridgeway Country Club was suspended due to darkness with the teams approximately 2/3 of the way through the second round.
The Islanders (+46) are just three shots out of fourth place, held by Montana and Xavier at +43. Host Memphis leads the way at +30, with Samford (+32) and Sam Houston State (+36) in second and third.
"With the way we ended round one, we could have been in for a long day," head coach Carol Blackmar said. "But I was really proud of how our players responded to the adversity in round two, and I hope we can carry over the momentum into tomorrow."
After a rough end to the opening 18 holes, the Islanders rebounded with a strong performance at the outset of the second round. Senior Ryann White (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado) led the way in round two, shooting three-under through her first 13 holes. She is one of just two players under par thus far in the second round.
Sophomore Lindsay Biehler (Austin, Texas/McNeil) was plus-3 through her first 11 holes, notching three bogeys and eight pars. Sophomore Taylor Slagle (Southlake, Texas/Southlake) and freshman Vanessa Johnson (Corpus Christi/Carroll) both were four-over in round two, with their first 11 holes in the books. Nikki Dunn sits plus-six after 12 holes.
The start of the first round was delayed over three hours due to heavy fog in the Memphis area. Dunn led the way with a first-round 78, while Slagle and Johnson each shot 81. After a solid start, White stumbled down the stretch with an 82, while Biehler carded an 83 through the first 18 holes.
The Islanders will continue play in round two starting at 8:20 a.m. ET on Tuesday, pending further weather delays. The team will then wrap up the event with the final 18 holes to follow immediately after.
