A key member of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Perry
Clark's teams at Tulane, Kim Lewis, has joined the Islander
coaching staff.
The former leader of the "Posse," Lewis joins the Islander staff
after spending the past two seasons with the Green Wave under then
head coach Dave Dickerson. It was his second stint with the Green
Wave, having served as an assistant for three seasons (1996-98)
under Clark after completing his collegiate career.
"I have known Kim for years and he is just a tremendous person,"
said Clark. "People who have watched him play and seen him coach
through the years can attest to the type of person he is. He has a
strong work ethic, is extremely dedicated to his job and has the
ability to communicate with young players. His ability to
communicate and teach those players is going to be critical this
year with the roster we have.
"Having coached him in the past and seeing the type of job he
has done as a coach at other schools, I really thought he was
someone we needed at this time. He has the ability to really
develop young players and, as I said, that will be extremely
important for us."
During his collegiate career, Lewis played an integral role in
helping build a program that had been dormant from 1985-86 until
Clark resurrected the program in 1988-89. Lewis was named the Metro
Conference Freshman of the Year in 1990-91 and was a second-team
All-Metro selection as a sophomore. During that sophomore season,
he led the Green Wave in scoring with 15.4 points a game helping
the school to its first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament, its
first conference crown and a No.-14 national ranking. After
advancing to the NIT as a junior, the Green Wave returned to the
NCAAs his senior season and compiled a record of 23-10 in the
process.
Lewis, who helped Tulane to 78 victories in four seasons, is the
career leader in steals and games played. He was 11th
all-time in scoring entering the 2009-10 season and ranks amongst
the all-time leaders in 3-pointers made, 3-pointers attempted,
3-pointer percentages, free throws made and free throws attempted.
He was named the Tulane T-Club Male Athlete of the Year as a
senior.
Following his collegiate career, Lewis was selected in the
seventh round of the CBA draft in 1995 by Sioux Falls with the
92nd pick. From 1998-2001, the newest Islander coach
played in the Icelandic Basketball League. During that time he was
named the league MVP and best all-around player, while leading his
team to the league title. He doubled as the head coach his first
season.
Upon finishing his playing career, Lewis re-entered coaching as
an assistant at Xavier University in New Orleans. After one season,
Lewis got his first taste of the Southland Conference when he
accepted a position at McNeese State under Tic Price. After the
2002-03 season, Lewis joined another Clark protégé
joining Ron Everhart at Northeastern and later followed him to
Duquesne. In 2007-08, he spent one season at Centenary before
heading back to Tulane.
A native of Angie, La., Lewis earned a bachelor's degree in
media arts/communications from Tulane in 1994.
