Looking to further develop and hone their skills on the diamond,
several members of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team
will be participating in various summer collegiate wooden bat
leagues across the nation that begin play this week.
"At this level, you have to do whatever you can do to g et
better," said Islander head coach Scott Malone. "It was important
that these guys did the job in the classroom in the fall and spring
to put them in a position to be available for another 30 games.
Playing in these leagues will allow them to continue to work on and
hone their skills.
Five members of the Islander baseball team will be spending
their summer in the Texas Collegiate League. Roman Madrid and
Jeramie Marek will be suiting up for the Victoria Generals, while
Chris Vergne and Adam Hoelscher will play for the first-year Texas
Tomcats. Trevor Foss was to play for the Brazos Valley Bombers but
is injured.
Multiple players are headed outside the state of Texas. Chris
Pena and Matt Holland will team together for the Front Royal
Cardinals in the Valley Baseball League in Virginia. Trey Hernandez
is playing for the Florence Redwolves in South Carolina in the
Coastal Plains League. Marc Damon and Bobby Buckner will head to
the West Coast and team together for the San Luis Obispo Rattlers
in the California Collegiate League.
Ian Campbell is headed north to Eau Claire, Wisc. to compete in
the Northwoods League. Weston Montgomery will be in Nevada, Mo.
playing in the M.I.N.K. (Missouri-Iowa-Nebraska-Kansas) League.
Thus far Hernandez is the first of the Islanders to take the
field with their summer teams. In his first 22 at bats, the
A&M-Corpus Christi slugger leads the Redwolves with a .409,
which is ninth in the league.
