Austin - Kassandrea Son made history Friday night at the 2010
NCAA West Regional being held at the University of Texas Mike A.
Myers Stadium. Son became the first member of the Islanders women's
team to qualify for the NCAA nationals to be held June 9-12th in
Eugene, Ore.
Son needed to place in the top 12 in order to reach the national
meet and heading into the finals she was in 10th. After all jumps
were completed her mark of 6.21-meters was good enough to head to
Eugene in a couple weeks.
"12th is as good as first since at nationals the slate will be
wiped clean for competition," said track and field head coach Randy
Bungard "For her to be the first female to qualify is a great
almost ending to the season for her and our program."
Former Islanders Shadrack Songok and Hickel Woolery were
previously the only members from either team to qualify for
nationals. Songok is the only track and field national champion in
program history and Woolery qualified multiple times in the
discus.
Freshman Roger De La Cruz also competed tonight in Austin in the
high jump. De La Cruz finished in 20th place in the men's high jump
with a mark of 2.06-meters (6-09.00) which was one of his best
marks of the season.
"For a freshman at regional's, that was a solid performance by
Roger tonight," said director of track and field Shawn
Flanagan.
