Brittany
Tucker and Elena Crabtree were named
the Southland Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week on Monday
afternoon after a vote by the league Sports Information Directors.
The pair of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball players helped
lead their team to its first ever appearance in the Southland
Conference Tournament starting this Thursday.
Tucker powered hit three home runs and six RBI in the series
against Southeastern Louisiana over the weekend. Two of Tucker's
home runs came in the third game with the Islanders in a must-win
situation. Down three runs with just two outs left in the game for
the Islanders, she hit a three-run home run over the right field
wall to knot the game at 7-7. In the top of the ninth Tucker hit
the first pitch she saw over the left field fence to give the
Islanders an eventual 8-7 victory. The home runs brought her to 11
on the season and set a new single-season school record.
Crabtree came into all three games in relief this weekend
against the Lady Lions and picked up all three wins as the
Islanders swept SELA to earn the school's first appearance in the
Southland Conference Tournament. She allowed just four earned runs
all weekend out of six total and had a 1.83 ERA while striking out
four batters.
The team is on a tear and has won its last five games entering
the league tournament. They will face off against McNeese State in
the opening game of the tournament on Thursday at 11 AM. The
Islanders have play the Cowgirls five times this season, going 4-1
against them including taking 2-of-3 on the road in Lake Charles,
La. during the conference weekend.
