Katy - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's
basketball team had the type of second-half performance that made
them one of the top teams in the Southland Conference, dominating
the Sam Houston State Bearkats by a 99-79 final in the opening
round of the Southland Conference Tournament. The Islanders used a
tremendous second half performance to make it to the second round
of the tournament in 3-of-4 years as a member of the
conference.
The Islanders set a new school record with six players
in double-digit scoring, led by Jade Davis' 18 points. Adrienne Scott added 17, Deziree
Green had 16, Anitra
Jeffery scored 13 while Elisa Beagle and Shaye
Montgomery scored 12 apiece. Green had 11 rebounds while
Beagle had 10 to have two Islanders with double-doubles.
In the first half, the Islanders trailed big early on
before getting within four points, 44-40, at the one minute mark.
The Islanders were unable to convert their final shot attempt while
the Bearkats hit a three-point shot with two seconds left to make
it a 47-40 halftime score.
The second half was a completely different story, with
the Islanders nearly matching their first half total in 12 minutes
of play. After scoring 40 in the opening period, the Islanders
scored 38 points in the opening 11:59 of play in the second to go
from down seven to up 12 points. A Davis three pointer with 14:56
left in the game gave TAMUCC their first lead since the 16:25 mark
of the first half. In total, the Islanders scored 59 points in the
half, third-most all-time for a second half in Islander
history.
With the win, TAMUCC advances to play Northwestern State in the
