The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will travel to
Austin on Thursday evening to take on the No. 15 Texas Longhorns in
a pair of midweek games. The first game is set to begin at 5 PM
with the second following immediately after at McCombs Field.
TAMUCC comes into the game with a 19-10 record on the year with
a win over a Top 25 team already under their belt. They beat the
Aggies of Texas A&M earlier this season in the first game of a
doubleheader in College Station. TAMU was ranked No. 21 at the
time and has since moved up to the No. 17 in the polls. Texas
comes into the game with a record of 23-6 after beating some of the
top competition in the nation this past weekend at the Judi Garman
Classic.
Centerfielder Cassie Redman leads the team
in hitting with a .408 average this season. She has one double,
one home run, seven RBI and 19 runs scored in 71 at-bats for
TAMUCC. She is followed by Hannah
Schwarz with a .386 average and 15 RBI.
Tops on the team in the RBI department is Caley
Jeter, the Islanders starting second baseman. She has 22 on
the season while Brittany
Tucker is close behind with 21 this year. Tucker leads the
team with six home runs with Margo Hurdt is right behind
her at five on the season.
In four games against the Longhorns last season, the Islanders
went 1-3 while being the first team of the season to shut them out,
winning 5-0 in their first meeting of the year. TAMUCC just missed
a complete comeback in the second game of the day in Corpus
Christi. In the two games at Austin, the Islanders led in the
seventh inning of both games before eventually falling to the
Longhorns.
