Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior outfielder Matt Holland
slugged a homer to right in the sudden-death round to edge
Oklahoma's Drew Harrison and capture Thursday night's Baseball
America Home Run Derby at Whataburger Field.
Holland, along with Harrison, a freshman infielder, and
Mississippi State senior infielder Russ Sneed finished the first
two rounds with five homers each. Holland and Harrison each drilled
one long ball in the three-out tiebreaking round.
Holland then blasted one out on his first swing in the
two-swing, sudden-death round. Harrison was unable to clear the
fence with either of his final cuts. A left-handed hitter, Holland
hit all seven of his home runs to right field, including one that
glanced off the foul pole.
Tournament play begins Friday at 2:00 p.m. when Mississippi
State battles Oklahoma. The Islanders take on undefeated UCLA at
6:00 p.m.
