Huntsville - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis
team lost its second 4-3 heartbreaker in as many days on Sunday
when they fell to Sam Houston State. It was the seventh 4-3 match
TAMUCC has been involved with in its 11 matches this year, winning
three and losing four.
The Islanders fall to 6-5 on the season and now sit even at 2-2
in Southland Conference matches. The Bearkats improved to 3-5 on
the year and 2-0 in Southland matches.
"This was an incredible battle two days in-a-row, a college
tennis match cannot get any closer than this," said Director of
Tennis Steve Moore. "We didn't win today, but I love the way this
young team is competing and they are on a very good path.
"I really like what they are about and they could not have
competed any harder today."
In doubles action, the Islanders won at the No. 2 spot but
suffered losses at the other two positions. Bianca Discordia and
Doris Kuselj defeated Sheridan Currie and Tatyana Postnikova with
an 8-4 score. At the No. 2 position, Mirna Cicak and Megan Harless
lost at the No. 1 spot to Federica Denti and Giorgia Pozzan by an
8-6 final while Nadia Filmalter and LeAnne Mascall fell 8-5 at No.
3 doubles to Nadia Dubyanskaya and Cally Woerner.
"I think they know how good they can be," said Moore. "I think
they realize that four or five points are the only thing that
separates us from being 4-0 in conference."
In the singles portion of the match, Cicak downed Pozzan at the
No. 1 spot by a 6-4, 7-5 final, Kuselj won at No. 2 with a 7-5, 7-5
final over Postnikova and Nadia Filmalterwon by default at the No.
6 position. Woerner defeated the Islanders Adrienne Kovacs at No.
5 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 score.
"For the second day in a row, it came down to 1 or 2 points late
in the third set that decided the whole match," said Moore. "The
upside to having a very young team is that they are learning and
are only going to keep getting better."
With the Islanders leading 3-2 in the dual match, the Bearkats
won the final two singles matches at No. 3 and No. 4 to take the
conference victory. Dubyanskaya beat Mascall 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at the
No. 4 spot to even the match and Discordia fell by a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4
final to Currie in the No. 3 position.
"There is really only one correct path in these situations, stay
positive, stick together and just work as hard as you humanly can,"
said Moore. "I promise you that is exactly what we'll do."
The next match for the Islanders is on Saturday, Mar. 6 at the
HEB Tennis Center against Texas State at 11 AM. Fans will be able
to see twice the action as the conference dual match will take
place at the same time as the 46th Annual HEB Tournament of
Champions is taking place.
