Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball player Deziree
Green was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine's Academic
All-District VI Second Team on Thursday, marking the second time
she has been named to the second team in her career. She received
the honor during the 2007-08 season as well.
"This is a great honor for Deziree she is a great definition of
the word student-athlete," said head coach Robert Robinson. "She
has great success both on the court and in the classroom."
Green started the year slow but has come on strong as of late,
averaging 7.6 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game. She is
fifth on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. She also
ranks as the 12th leading rebounder in the Southland
Conference.
In the classroom, Green has continued to excel throughout her
career, holding a 3.5 GPA in kinesiology. The senior from Houston
has been continually recognized for her efforts, claiming two
CoSIDA All-District awards in her career as well as being named to
the Southland Conference All-Academic team the past two
seasons.
"This is a great honor for both her and the women's basketball
program," said Robinson. "She is the kind of kid that has helped us
have great success."
She has also been a big contributor on the floor, using her
defense to help the Islanders to a 14-6 overall record and a 6-1
start to the Southland slate. It is the best conference start in
school history.
The award marks 4-out-of-5 years the Islanders have placed a
member on the CoSIDA team, with Green and Jenesis Shaw making
second team and Nicole Duncan making first team in 2007-08, Terra
Andrews made the second team in 2006-07 and Andrews and Duncan
making the second team during the 2005-06 season.
