The opening day of the three-day Stripes Islander Golf Classic
at the Corpus Christi Country Club is in the books with Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi's Ryann White finishing in a tie for fifth
highlighting the first round.
The second round of the event is Monday with a shotgun start at
10 a.m. with the final round Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
White fired a 37 over the second nine holes finishing tied with
six others at 76. White is four shots behind individual leader
Kirsten Spittler of Sam Houston State. Spittler carded a 36 on each
side of the 18. UMKC's Kati Scholten is second after day one with
two shots off the lead.
As a team, the Islanders finished the day in ninth with a 327 a
shot behind Houston Baptist and ahead of Southland rivals Stephen
F. Austin and McNeese State. Aside from White, Courtney Peeler and
Cecilia Jeon each had scores of 81. Chelsey and Ashley Watkins had
rounds of 89 and 90, respectively. In her first collegiate round,
Katie Belser carded an 87 as an individual.
"Ryann had a nice, solid round to finish tied for fifth," said
head coach Carol Blackmar. "The conditions were tough with the wind
but we should be used to that. We are a much better team than we
showed. We didn't bring our 'A' game."
Oral Roberts surged to first by nine strokes with a 306 as three
players fired 76s. UTEP and Tulsa finished the day at 315. UMKC and
North Texas are tied for fourth at 316. McLennan Community College
was sixth at 317. Sam Houston State was seventh with a 318.
