The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi welcomes 11 colleges and
universities to the Par-72, 6,087-yard Corpus Christi Country Club
as it hosts the Stripes Islander Classic Sunday through Tuesday.
The tournament will begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
Monday's action is slated for a 10 a.m. tee time with Tuesday again
at 8:30.
Joining the Islanders in the field will be Southland Conference
rivals McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin, and Sam Houston State.
Also competing will be UTEP, North Texas, UMKC, Oral Roberts,
Tulsa, Houston Baptist, Texas-Pan American and McLennan Community
College. Tulsa is the 33rd-ranked team in the
country.
"Even though the field is a little smaller than in the past, it
is the strongest field we've probably had," said Islander head
coach Carol Blackmar. "Tulsa has been near the top 25-30 all season
and Oral Roberts is also strong."
It is the second tournament of the spring for the Islanders who
competed at Koasati Pines Collegiate Classic two weeks ago to start
the season. Balckmar's team has been hampered by poor weather that
has led to the inability to prepare consistently.
"All of our sports have had issues because of the weather," said
Blackmar. "We need some better weather which allows us to get into
a rhythm when it comes to preparing. It makes it difficult if
things are always being changed.
"The team knows what we need to do to get better. They were at
regionals last season and know what it takes to get back."
