FRISCO - Texas A&M - Corpus Christi sophomore Patrick Kimeli
was named Southland Conference Athlete of the Year along with Emily
Koenig of UT Arlington on Thursday. In addition to Kimeli, junior
Julia Sambu made the all-conference team.
Kimeli became the third individual to finish first at the
conference meet, joining two-time winner Shadrack Songok and Anne
Ronoh. This is the second-straight year the Islanders cross country
program had a runner named male/female athlete of the year with
Ronoh capturing the honor last year.
"This is a big deal for Patrick and the whole program. He has
really improved in the last year moving from 15th to 1st," said
head coach Shawn Flanagan "He is just a sophomore with a bright
future for us."
Kimeli finished first in Beaumont at the conference meet with a
time of 24:47.0. Sambu received all-conference honors after
finishing in the top 10 in fourth-place with a time of
21:43.1.
Next up for the Islanders is the South Central Regional hosted
by Baylor University in Waco on Saturday, Nov. 13.
