The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball
program added another big piece to their program this past week
after signing Ashley Phelps to a National Letter of Intent.
"Ashley is a strong, physical player who puts
a lot of heat on the ball and will help us on both the outside and
right side," said head coach Tony Graystone. "We're very excited about Ashley
joining the Islanders and know she'll have a great career with
us."
Phelps, a 6'1" outside hitter from Colorado
who played at Conifer High School where she helped lead her
team to the district
playoffs as a senior. She
finished her senior season with a team-high 246 kills and was
second on squad with 123 digs during the year. She also added 18 service aces, 22
block solos and 11 block assists in 58 sets.
For her efforts, she was named first team
all-conference and MVP as well as being selected to the All-State
team following her senior season. She was chosen to play in the
Colorado All-State Volleyball Games, one of just 90 players chosen
for the event.
She was the volleyball team captain and also
helped coach younger kids on an eighth grade team and another
middle school recreational team. She has played club volleyball for
the Colorado Juniors for the past four years and has competed in
the Junior Olympics every year since her freshman season.
A standout player, Phelps was nominated by
opposing coaches for the Gatorade Player of the Year award and was
also selected as a "Player to Watch" by the American Volleyball
Association (AVA) and the National Volleyball Association
(NVA).
